20 Parking Lot Safety Tips

When my Daughter was working at a local shopping center, all the employee had to park at the other end of the parking lot. My other Daughter was away in college she was far away and on her own also. This is one of the reasons that I made sure that both of them carried pepper spay. As a Law Enforcement Professional I taught them safety tips and told them that they should be always aware of their surroundings. This is because predators delight at the thought of seeing a woman by herself late at night in a near empty parking lot. It is just too much of a temptation. A woman in those circumstances is almost helpless. Here are some safety tips to avoid potential trouble for women’s self-defense and parking lot safety.
  1. Always lock your vehicle, both when you’re driving and once you’ve parked. Make this a habit.
  2. When you get ready to park your car, scan the area for anyone or anything suspicious.
  3. Park as close to your destination as possible.
  4. Don’t leave your keys in the ignition. (you’d be surprised)
  5. Don’t leave valuables (Baby,GPS, Cell Phone, Wallets, cash, etc) in the vehicle in plain sight, unless they are secured in the trunk. If you secure your belongings in the trunk, make sure no one is watching you store them there. Many trunks can be accessed by pushing a release button inside the car, and a thief will break into your car in order to access the trunk area if it is worth his/her effort.
  6. Back into a parking space if possible, so that you can exit quickly if needed.
  7. If escort help is available, make sure you take advantage of it. A few grocery stores still offer this service.
  8. Try making your shopping trips during the day. Like most vermin, crooks mostly operate under cover of darkness.
  9. Always be aware of your surroundings, and don’t be distracted by talking on your cell phone. Is the parking lot well-lit? Are there areas where a predator could hide? Can they be under your car? Is a big van parked beside your car?
  10. Upon approaching your car look around, in, underneath and next to your car. I heard of a woman who had her foot licked by a pervert as she was trying to get into her car, or a woman having someone grab her ankles and making her fall, and then someone else attacking her once she fell.
  11. Beware of a van that has a sliding door. There could be persons who can quickly open that sliding door, snatch you to make you a sex slave.

  12. Have your Security Patrol Service escort you to your car. Listen to that inner voice. It is better and wiser to be safe than raped, robbed or dead.
  13. Once inside the car, quickly lock all doors. Most people let their guard down once inside their car.
  14. If you are alone wait until others walk by and join them from a distance.
  15. Avoid strangers. Again trust your instinct.
  16. Keep your cell phone in a pocket, or somewhere easily accessible.
  17. Carry some non-lethal personal protection product like a stun gun or pepper spray .
  18. If you don’t have pepper spray on your key chain, then when approaching your vehicle hold your keys in your hand the way you would hold a screwdriver. Don’t lace them through your fingers, as this can hurt your fingers. The keys can be used in a striking or slashing motion, if necessary. Go for the eyes if possible.
  19. Wear comfortable shoes when walking to your car, so that you could run if necessary. Heels may make you feel sexy, but they can prevent you from escaping.
  20. If you see someone tamper or damage someone else’s vehicle, call the police immediately.
Distractions are plentiful when shopping. It is so easy to become engaged in something else and not be aware of your surroundings. Especially if you have to deal with your children, the possibilities of harm seem to grow the further away you are from the store. Crooks depend on these things.
Be prepared and carry some non-lethal personal protection product  like a stun gun or pepper spray. Self-defense personal alarms can be useful as well. It is too easy to believe nothing will happen to you.
Remember to trust your instincts – you can’t ever be too careful.
